Sixth Week of Lent ~ Friday

Updated: Feb 16, 2024

Jesus knew His end was coming and when He left, His disciples would need another to guide them on their way. Before he left, Jesus allowed Mary to perform this extravagant offering to teach them about who He was, to show them that He was worth their everything... but that even when He left them, there would be another to continue guiding and leading them ~ the Spirit.

- Read John 12

In the New International Version

- Devotional Thought

Our sacrifice will always seem unnecessary and extravagant in the eyes of others, it won’t make sense to them and it will seem pointless. Even the way Jesus knew the donkey would be waiting for him.

How closely they must’ve walking with the father to be aware of those thoughts and ideas he was planting in their heads. How great their confidence in the word of the Lord to them that they could follow.

What Mary did is still spoken about today, and Palm Sunday is a celebration we still hold today! Jesus knew that His time would end on earth but that these things would go on being told about forever. At the time, they didn't understand the importance of these moments but in hindsight, we do. We are thankful for the moments Jesus highlighted in scripture because they remind us of who He is and that nothing that is still on earth could take that away. When He left, He told them that He would leave His Spirit to continue leading and guiding them along His ways... and at that time they may not have realised what that meant, but in hindsight we do.

Our dependance on the Spirit that others may not see or percieve will seem unecessary and extravagant to others, but it's that very longing in us to hear His voice that keeps us close to Him and our eyes on Him and not on anything or anyone else.

- Passage to focus on

““Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”

They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!” Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written: “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.””

‭‭John‬ ‭12‬:‭7‬-‭8‬, ‭13‬-‭15‬ ‭NIV‬‬

- Prayer

Father, we look at Mary’s sacrifice and Jesus confidence and we pray for that same confidence in our lives. That we may hear what you are callling us to do (even if it is diffferent or not been seen before). Helps us to learn your voice again like sheep and to know what you are saying as it grows in our hearts and minds to follow you

- Active idea

What are you holding onto in your life that could be your extravagant sacrifice of praise? How can you show your love for the Father that surprises others?

Thank you for joining me today! Hope to see you again soon!

Have a blessed Lent
