​We don’t know what to do but our eyes are on you

As I read that in Scripture this morning, it was the most wonderful comfort to my heart, soul and mind.

In 2 Chronicles 20, the people of God are facing possible defeat.

In a battle that seems impossible to overcome... King Jehoshaphat had just been told that a large army was coming up agains his people. In his state of alarm, He called for everyone to seek the Lord. He commanded a fast for all of Judah and in this time of approaching trail, all the people of Judah came together to enquire of the Lord.

We see King Jehoshaphat stand up in the temple and proclaim a great declaraiton of the greatness of the Lord before all the people.

And we also see him reminidng himself and the people about the history of their God, how He has overcome before. He talks of the power of the Lord, he speaks of the Lord reaching into their circumstances when they had cried out to Him before.

We can really be inspired by their actions. No, they didn't have a perfect track record of following the Lord closely, but right in that moment and in countless other places in scripture, we see people gathering to seek the Lord above the fast approaching battle.

They could've immediately set out to gather their weapons, to form a battle plan and to march out for the fight... but NO! Instead they met in the house of the Lord to hand their circumstances over to Him!

They knew that the army who were against them were far greater than their own and they had every reason to fear... but they didn't let the fear take over...

They let their PRAISE take over!

Because they had the faith to believe even when it seemed unlikely, the were able to confidently proclaim their trust in the Lord!

My favourite verse in this chapter in Chronicles is verse 12...

"We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”

Overcoming was unlikely in the physical, it was unlikely to the people looking it. But it was highly likely with the Lord..

. so they chose to focus on the Lord!

We see how the people gathered in the midst of approaching battle, spent time praising and seeking the Lord and then only setting out much later on to battle. But even when they set out - they were still singing praises to God! And when God defeated the army in front of them, the story of their defeat spread to all the neighbouring areas and they came under the fear of the Lord!

Isn't it amazing - how your faith in difficulty is the testimony of the goodness of God to all those around you! People don't remember your struggle, they will remember your overcoming!

We might not find ourselves in a literal army facing a literal war, but we are faced with trials of all kinds each and every day... the biggest one being the one in our minds!

But like countless other places in Scripture. We can learn from God’s people about how to position ourselves with the real weapons of warfare. We can learn how to use our faith in action through solid belief in Scripture to speak it over ourselves as a declaration that we cannot and will not be defeated.

(vs3~4) "Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the Lord, and he proclaimed a fast for all Judah.The people of Judah came together to seek help from the Lord"

(vs6) "You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand you."

(vs9) "‘If calamity comes upon us, whether the sword of judgment, or plague or famine, we will stand in your presence before this temple that bears your Name and will cry out to you in our distress, and you will hear us and save us.’"

(vs12) "For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”

(vs15) "‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s."

(vs17) "You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you.’”

(vs21) "Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the Lord and to praise him for the splendor of his holiness as they went out at the head of the army, saying:
“Give thanks to the Lord,
    for his love endures forever.”

(vs22) "As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated."

(vs27~28) "Then, led by Jehoshaphat, all the men of Judah and Jerusalem returned joyfully to Jerusalem, for the Lord had given them cause to rejoice over their enemies. They entered Jerusalem and went to the temple of the Lord with harps and lyres and trumpets."

(vs29~30) "The fear of God came on all the surrounding kingdoms when they heard how the Lord had fought against the enemies of Israel. And the kingdom of Jehoshaphat was at peace, for his God had given him rest on every side."
